Behind the Scenes

When you’re working on a set, there are several people moving around you at all times, unless “action” has been called. You could hear a pin drop when that happens.

The minute the director says, “cut” if they say that word, there’s the makeup and hair person who comes over and brushes your hair, sprays it, dabs your face with a sponge and glosses your lips.

The wardrobe person smooths out your shirt, swipes your pants of any wrinkles, may even clip your shirt in the back or have you remove the shirt and have you stand in a bathrobe, while they iron it…again.

There are the set designers who walk around with a mini Etch a sketch thing that shows them what the shot looks like on camera. When they look at it they quickly pop in and replace items with different ones or remove them altogether.

Then there are the people who are filming you. The camera men, producer, director, assistant director, sound mixer, boom operator, gaffers, grips, director of photography, the list goes on and on and because there are so many people doing so many different jobs, it takes about 10 hours to get that one shot.

That one shot is the commercial you watch where an actor is doing some type of action. It’s quite fascinating really. You have no clue what has gone on behind the scenes, you just see what they wanted you to see.

Which is what a lot of people do. They show you who they want you to see, but behind the scenes they might be a completely different person.

Some people are very quiet. You might even think they are boring, but behind the scenes they might be singing in a jazz quartet on the weekends and because you were so quick to dismiss them, they didn’t bother to share this with you.

Some people have tattoos of spiders, snakes and tigers on their body and so you steer clear of them. Behind the scenes they might save animals for a living and maybe the creatures they put on their body have meaning to them, but you missed hearing about their adventures because you were too quick to judge them.

Some people act like they have money living in their nice house and driving their nice car, but behind the scenes they might be living paycheck to paycheck.

Some people will pretend to be good parents. They might brag about their children to anyone who will listen and even post photos of them on their social media. You would think they are awesome by what they show and tell you, but behind the scenes there are no children in their lives because the children got tired of being hurt by them.

Some people will go out of their way to be there for friends, neighbors and even strangers. They’re usually that person who everyone thinks is nice. But behind the scenes, they might abuse their dog, cat and family. No one would ever believe they do this because they are Emmy award winning actors and excel at playing the victim. But the real victims are the ones who have to witness what this charlatan gets away with.

You never know what’s going on behind the scenes with anyone. People post happy faces on Instagram when they are miserable as hell. They pretend to have their life together when it is really falling apart and they embellish their accomplishments when they feel inferior to others.

People have many faces and some of them are rather heinous. There won’t be any camera men, gaffers or grips when they leave your presence, but there will be the truth. And often times people’s truths are pretty awful. This is why I never take a person at face value; I take in far more than that when I am in their company.

People live with pain, they suffer and they are sad and lonely. Just because someone puts on a brave face doesn’t mean they are brave. And just because someone puts on a nice face, doesn’t mean they aren’t malicious, calculating and petty.

There are people who are masters at lying. The reason people are always so shocked when they learn the truth about someone, is because liars believe their own lies, that’s why they are so convincing.

But they do have one really big fear. The reason they have this fear is because the likelihood of it happening to them is inevitable. You can’t expect to lie and do all that dirty work to others behind the scenes and not eventually get some dirt on yourself.

What is that on your sleeve? Oh, it’s just a piece of lint. But if you keep lying and hurting others, soon enough it will be dirt, and that’s when your unjust activity behind the scenes not only becomes the talk of the town, it becomes your demise.

I’ve been acting a long time which is how I know that behind the scenes is where the real action takes place. So the next time someone is trying too hard to sell you something, just know that they might be the same person who has sold others out, which means they will do it to you as well.
